I am an ag teacher and have showed pigs for 20 years. I am tring to fix a problem that seems to be getting worse. Pigs at about 5 mo 180 lbs after they have be stressed (1st show, pulling blood, etc.) some will become lame in one rear leg. When this happens they will never recover. it shows no other signs of Mycroplas. Is there anyone that has a preventitive for mycroplas or white mus.

You can vaccinate for mycoplasma when they are young.  Their are several products, the one we use is called Respisure or Respisure One, and I vaccinate all of our babies as well as any that we bring from other sales or farms.  I think it has really helped.  Look in Valley Vet supply or ask your vet about it.  Hope this helps.

We spent some $$ and had every intention of competing at Houston this year and our spot came up lame.  We thought originally it was ligament or cartilage damage and the vets we spoke with told us it was Mycoplas and kept telling us to do "this and that" and he will be sound enough to show.  But about $500 later in vet bills and medication we have decided that it is not going to get better and we will be eating some expensive pork chops.  I would say to anyone who has swelling in the hocks and the pig doesn't respond to a heavy dose of medication early on....cut your losses.  We used severaly different type of medications and oral and injectable supplements.  This is only my first experience with Mycoplasma and we learned the hard way!

Lonestar,

Unfortunately you learned it the expensive way.  It is true, once they get Mycroplasma settled in the joints, it is usually too late.  There are vaccines available to try to prevent it though.  We vaccinate all of our babies and anything we bring home from other places with it.  The only treatment is high dose Lincomycin along with some Dexamethasone to try to decrease the swelling and kill the pneumonia virus.  It only seems to work if you catch it early and treat aggressively.  Hope this helps.  An ounce of prevention is definately worth a pound of cure.  Vet bills are no fun!
