Hi,

I am new to this board and have a couple of questions....How old does a calf need to be when you wean it from it's mom? Do I need to feed him anything special or is  mom enough? Also will it be safe to put both mom and baby back into the pasture with the rest of the herd? How soon can I breed mom back?

Thanks for your time, Kim :)

well you have many questions and i will answer yours with what we do with our cattle. weanin ur calf we wean ours at bout 6 to 8 months... most people feed the valf creep feeder out of a creep feeder, we also feed hay to our cattle year round you could do that too. we also give them mineral lick tubs. but its your preference. you can put the cow back in the field at ne time but ull wanna leave the calf out from in the herd again or he will go back to nursing on the cow.. also you need to figure out if its a heifer if your gonna use it for breeding or a market calf and if its a bull if your a gonna keep him as a bull or a steer.. and you should be able to breed the cow back in 90 days of giving the calf you should see her come back into heat if she is bullin or she could be a silent heat cycler.. do you a.i you cows or let the bull do the business..

i hope i was of some help...

we when show calve sat 4-5 months and we feed creep for a month before we wean, we wean the big cow herd at 7-8 months and dont feed anything until we are weaning, it will take about a week to 2 weeks to wean a calf, and then i would keep him from the heard for at least a month,  you can put them with the herd now and then when you wean you can seperate them. you can re-bread her at 30-90 days  after she has calved. how much do you want for the calf?? if it full highlander? cna i get some more pics?
