Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to keep a steer from bloating. It has already bloated twice (2 vet visits already and fair isn't until August) and looks like it could again almost anytime. We have cut back on grain, using only grass hay (no alfalfa), giving pro-bios, and using a powder bicarbonate on the grain to help prevent it. We also have a bloat block in the pen.
Any new suggestions that have worked will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help! Ronda

Last year I had a steer that was a chronic bloater. I ended up feeding him by himself and giving him a 1/4 a cup of baking soda in the morning and also at night. Just mix it into his feed. I suggest you start out in smaller quantities, whatever you feel works. This worked for me and I suggest you try it. My steer was fine all summer and ended up being the top gaining steer at our county fair. Good Luck!

| I had a steer last year that did the same thing. I gave him corn oil once a day. I gave him 20 cc a day of the oil. He did not bloat again after that.

Please walk your steer as much as possible - if you have someone who is comfortable putting things down your steers throat - drench him good with mineral oil then walk him until you hear that gas come out - my son's did that towards the end because we started adding corn and oats into his feed - we were using a Hi Pro finishing feed - we should have never added that corn or oats - he was fine on hay and that HI Pro or Showmasters Feed - Finishing Feed - however, until he is completely over the bloat - you want to feed him very little - and then bring him back like you would if you were changing him over from hay to feed - back off the hay once you have him on full feed - so he will gain weight - go out to Showmaster's website - those people are so very kind - if you write them and ask a question - someone will call you back within 24 hrs - be careful though cause that feed is a medicated feed and very strong - another lady who took six place in Ft Worth said she feeds her steers in the evening - they get the best gain like this - give him hay in mornings and all the feed he wants in evening -
