| I have heard that doublestuff, warhorse, suds, windstar, perfect weapon, are pha carriers. They go back to stinger bull. I've heard that doublestuff and warhorse are carrier's of both th and pha. What say you?

Here are the bulls from various websites (Genetic Horizons, Maine Anjou)...Landmark, Irish Whiskey, Vaquero, Ice Chest, Cowboy Cut
The Maine Anjou site lists 3 cows...one is a draftpick granddaughter, once is an Irish Whiskey daughter, the other is a Power Plant granddaughter, although Power Plant is not thought (as of now) to be a carrier.
The two bulls they suspect to be the original "bad boys" are Shaver Bysantin and Epinal. By searching the pedigrees on the Maine Anjou site, the confirmed carriers trace to those two bulls many, many times!

| Anything tracing back to Stinger is suspect on the Shorthorn side. SO, any double stuff bloodlines cattle. THen you have the crossbreds that also might carry those lines as well.

The only bulls that i have found that have been Tested PHA Free for the shorthorn breed are as follows:

- ZIA ESD Smooth Criminal

- Little Cedar Churchill 414
- Elbee Leader C087 "Gizmo"
The bulls that i found for the Maine Anjou breed that came back PHA free are as follows:
- Cowan's Ali 4M
- The Witch Doctor
- CMAC Hard Core
- BK Lifeline 258J
- EBB Strictly Business
- TLM Bouncer 152L
- Major Money Man 673J
- RSG Payoff 805E MCF
- GCC Chill Factor
- FGJ Habanero
- Mitten Man Q35P
- MCF Maine Break
Also you wanna be careful when you are also choosing club calves because some of them have been proven to be PHA positive... And also a lot of them are unknown so we are not sure if they are PHA comfirmed or PHA free.
There are quite a few that are PHA unknown... So i would be less likely to use those bull that have not been proven Free or Comfirmed...

| well in the shorthorns if double stuff has pha then 95 percent of the shorthorns are going to be charachters because there are very few outcross cows

That is very true... but you also have to consider the genetic make up to. Just because a dam was bred to a realtive of Double stuff doesnt mean that you will come out with a PHA positive calf. You have to consider the Dominate and ressive genes in that cows make up. There is really no way to know if any of the unknown cattle do or do not carry the PHA trait. With out the tests done on the cow you are pretty much "blind" breeding and hoping for the best. Also testing the cow is quite easy, all you have to do it cut a small chuck out of their ear and send it to the Lab. It is about $65 i believe to get the PHA and the TH checked at the same time
That is why it is my preference to breed my cattle to the the sires that are only proven PHA Free. I just think that it is safer that way, and it seems to be working...

no no no you dont take a chunck out of they're ear you take a blood samle and send it to the lab it only cost 42 or 47 to get both done, sek gentics has all pha results

No i am pretty sure SEK doesnt. I just took a College AI'ing class through them and it was explained to us a lot differently than that. Our instructor, also someone that works for SEK, told us that you had to take the chunk outa the ear, but i know that you can also do a boold sample if yiou hasve a local vet that is able to do the testing. If you dont you do have tot ake the chunk out of the ear to be able to send the blood sample to the lab.
also SEWK does not have all of the test results for every bull that they put in there...

Here's the deal on PHA testing. SEK was handling phone calls and giving verbal results for both PHA and TH tests, so yes they did have a master list and many, many people have called them for their results. They are no longer handling phone calls for AgriGenomics, so now they will not have results if you call them. Don Coover tests all bulls that could be possible carriers in which he sells semen for, in fact he was very instrumental in finding some semen samples for us to do the initial mapping and mutation detection.
A vet does not do the test. It is a DNA based test that is available only though AgriGenomics. They do NOT accept tissue samples for routine testing. The only samples that are accepted are blood (unclotted in a purple/EDTA tube) or a thawed straw of semen. The only instances where tissues are used is in cases where a dead calf is thought to be positive.

This list is from SEK genetics, so yes they do have a list. And like the last poster said you send in blood or semen. And The vets cant do the test they draw the blood and then you send it off to Don Coover
